|Championing the Fight Against Heart Disease|
|Anyone can have a child born with a congenital heart defect (a structural problem with the heart), present at birth. Out of 1,000 births, at least ten babies will have some form of congenital heart anomaly. Defects range in severity from "simple problems", such as holes between chambers of the heart, to very severe malformations, such as complete absence of one or more chambers or valves. Depending upon the severity of the defect, several of them are repaired at birth, others are not. Congenital heart disease is presumed to be genetic, yet only a few genes have been discovered that have been linked to the presence of heart defects. |
Also, many children born with congenital heart disease have developmental delays that require school-based resources and various therapies to achieve optimum functioning.
Joey, my radiant sun/son, was born with severe congenital heart disease in 1991. For nearly 15 years, neither his multiple heart surgeries, developmental delays nor physical limitations impacted his zest for life. In contrast, he taught everyone around him HOW TO LIVE life to the fullest! He captivated our hearts and motivated our spirit!
Imagine the impact on the future generations of families if cardiovascular diseases and stroke can be reduced by 20% by 2020!
On April 29th, I walked in my second 1/2 Marathon (13.1 miles) w/the American Heart Association's Start Training program to promote physical activity and build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
Please support me and help 'pay it forward' for our children, and future generations to follow.
Thank you in advance for your support.
