What is Start Training?

Start Training is a fitness and fundraising program of the American Heart Association that supports vital research, education and advocacy programs that fight heart disease and stroke. Train to walk or run a 10k or half marathon; we have coaches who will help you every step of the way!

• Walkers and runners are welcome
• No experience necessary
• Take part in weekly group trainings led by volunteer coaches in seven locations across the Greater Bay Area and South Bay
• Have fun, meet new people, and get fit
• Modest $750 fundraising minimum ($650 for alumni) - the lowest in the Bay Area!

We will have 7 training sites throughout the Bay Area, within the Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Silicon Valley counties. We also offer a Virtual Team.

Make a difference in your own life while raising funds for the millions of Americans whose lives are instantly and profoundly changed by heart disease and stroke.

Training begins January 2017. Participants will train to complete the Brazen Western Pacific Half Marathon in Fremont, CA on Saturday, April 29th 2017.

About The Event

Used in the 1800s to transport gravel for the construction of the western section of the Transcontinental Railroad, the Western Pacific Trail now forms a part of this mostly-flat course where you can haul in a personal best! The marathon course is now USATF certified and can be used to qualify for races like the Boston Marathon!
All races begin and end at Quarry Lakes. The 10K, half marathon and marathon races go out along the Alameda Creek Trail.

All finishers will receive custom finisher medals and custom shirts. In addition to the marathon distance, half marathon, 10K and 5K races will also take place.

About The Program

The fundraising minimum (lowest in the Bay Area!) will be $750. All donations support American Heart Association's programs and research. Fundraising minimums include your registration, race entry, and a ticket to post-event celebration.

My involvement with the American Heart Association’s Start Training Program was aimed at completing a half marathon following my heart attack. As you can probably imagine, I was thrilled to complete my first ever half marathon on May 1, 2010 with the aid of this program and its amazing team of coaches and mentors. Since 2010, I have completed several other half marathons so this program helped kick-start my desire to stay heart healthy and to cross that finish line repeatedly.

What I appreciated most about working with the American Heart Association is their willingness to help every participant exceed his or her goals, keep everyone happy and healthy and to get them across that finish line … and doing this all while fighting the nation’s number one and number five killers: heart disease and stroke.

I joined the Start Training Team trying to meet new people and looking for some running buddies after 6 months of moving to the Bay Area. I did not only meet people, found running buddies and made new friends, I found a loving and supportive family.

I didn't think I could do it, so I signed up to prove myself wrong. I may not have wanted to do it alone, but this group helped me to coast through my goal of my first half marathon and has been by my side as I took on a full and even a few ultras! If I can do it, anyone can! And this is the best group for anyone looking to find support and build community.

I signed up to start training with a hope that in a group I might meet my goal of running further than 2 blocks without feeling exhausted. I never thought I would have the support, love and friendships I made through this awesome program that would lead me to be a multiple marathon runner. I might have got there eventually on my own but boy I wouldn't have had half the fun I had doing it with them.

I am running for my dad. He is a stroke survivor and he is my inspiration every day.

I joined the Start Training Program to help a good cause in honor of my grandmother who passed away from a heart attack. A secondary goal was to get on a regular walking schedule. What happened was such much more! I was overwhelmed by the support and encouragement I received from my coaches about fundraising most importantly the confidence that I could achieve the weekly walking goals. I received overwhelming support from my friends and peers on Facebook. I raised more money than I imaged that I was able raise, which I was just thrilled. I went on trails that I had never been on and met several people that I am proud to call my friends. If you are even slightly considering walking, running or cycling…now is the time, you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

My testimony of starting with the Start Training Program began with my dad and grandmother passing of heart disease and stroke. This led me to do better and try and stay better with my own health, although not perfect, but has changed for the better and I'm able to speak to others with a clear conscience about taking steps towards better health.
