Start Training Participant Commitment

Thank you for your interest in the American Heart Association’s (AHA) fundraising event, Start Training. Start Training is a program that helps generate funds for heart disease and stroke research, education and advocacy programs. As a Start Training participant, you will play a critical role in helping further the mission of the AHA—to reduce disability and death from heart disease and stroke—as well as educating the public on heart disease and stroke and its oftentimes debilitating effects. As a Start Training participant, you will be making a significant commitment to the Association. We hope that you will find Start Training to be a life-changing commitment--one you will not regret making. Throughout the 14-week program, we ask you to commit to train for and participate in a 10k or half marathon event. We also ask you to honor a heart disease or stroke survivor on whose behalf you will be walking/running/cycling. We ask you to actively participate in program-related activities held at the site of your event as well as team events leading up to your event. This may include participation in media events, meetings with local officials, and Start Training fundraising and training clinics.

As a Start Training participant, you will receive no compensation from the American Heart Association. You will, however, be asked to raise funds for heart disease and stroke research as well as to help defray the costs of the Start Training program.

Fundraising Information
There is a required fundraising minimum for the event. This minimum is set to ensure we keep our program costs low as well as maximize the funds made available to further our mission to fight disability and death from heart disease and stroke.

Because we recognize the level of commitment we ask all participants to make, we are here to help each and every participant raise at least the minimum fundraising amount. Our program is structured so that we can provide the support you need to help you reach your fundraising goal. A staff person will be designated and available to assist you in your fundraising efforts. You will also be provided a participant toolkit with recommended fundraising tactics and guidelines. We take your commitment to raise funds seriously and we’re here to help you every step of the way so that you are successful in your efforts.

To participate in the Brazen Western Pacific Race on Saturday, April 29, 2017, the fundraising minimum is $750. Start Training alumni have the option to get a $100 credit towards this minimum.

Your Commitment to AHA
Between 4-8 weeks into the season we will ask you to submit a "Recommitment Form" confirming your commitment to the team. Your commitment to raise the fundraising minimum is extremely important. At this time (if you have not already raised and submitted the fundraising minimum amount listed above), you will secure your position on the team with a credit card or check payment. This payment will be the difference between what you have already raised and the minimum fundraising amount - and will be processed on the final fundraising deadline of Monday, April 24, 2017. If by the recommitment deadline, you decide not to recommit, you will no longer be a team member and any donations received until this point are non-refundable.

Media Release
As a Start Training participant, you permit the AHA the use of your name, likeness, image, voice, appearance and performance embodied in any media created for Start Training. You also release, discharge and agree to hold harmless the AHA from any liability or injury that may occur from the conveyances and/or permissions in this Agreement.

Our Commitment to You- AHA’s Privacy Policy
The American Heart Association values and respects an individual's right to keep certain Personal Information private. Likewise, the AHA values the need to collect and use Personal Information, which will enable the AHA to effectively deliver products and services leading to a reduction in disability and death from heart diseases and stroke. "Personal Information" is Demographic Information and/or Medical Information that identifies a specific individual with a minimal degree of effort. Demographic Information includes name, address, city and other similar information. Medical Information includes diseases, treatments, lifestyle behaviors, family history, genotype, phenotype and other similar information.

AHA Use of Personal Information
When an individual provides Personal Information to the AHA, the AHA may use the Personal Information for its programs, research and fundraising. Unless required by law, AHA will not disclose participants’ personal information to third parties without participants’ permission.


Start Training involves running long distances, walking long distances, cycling long distances, strength training, stretching-- potentially hazardous activities which may include risks such as, but not limited to, falls, contact with other participants, sports injuries, serious bodily injuries, effects of weather, traffic, exposure to cold, and exposure to heat. In consideration of being allowed to participate in this event, I hereby expressly assume all risks, including personal injury, fatalities, and other physical injury arising out of my participation in Start Training and related activities.

It is my responsibility to provide and properly use clothing and shoes suited to running and/or walking, and to ensure that all clothing and equipment are properly fitted and appropriate for use in this event. Although refreshments and other assistance may be made available during this event, I am solely responsible for my own health and safety. I understand that it is my responsibility to consult with a physician to determine my fitness to engage in these activities. I agree to stop and request assistance if I experience any symptoms such as, but not limited to, dizziness, excessive fatigue, shortness of breath, pain or any other conditions which would make it difficult or unsafe to continue.

I agree, for myself, my heirs, executors and administrators, to not sue and to release, indemnify and hold harmless, the American Heart Association, Inc., the American Stroke Association, its Affiliates, Start Training coaches, mentors, officers, directors, volunteers and employees and all sponsoring businesses and organizations and their agents and employees, from any and all liability, claims, demands, and causes of action whatsoever, arising out of my participation in this event and related activities -- whether it results from the negligence of any of the above or from any other cause.

The foregoing release and indemnification agreement shall be as broad and inclusive as is permitted by the State or Province in which the event is conducted. If any portion of it is held invalid, the balance shall continue in full force and effect.

Participants under the age of 18
Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all events covered by this agreement. Additionally, to participate, this Release must be signed by parent or legal guardian if participant is under the age of 18 on the date this Release is signed. (Participant must be at least 15 years of age. Not all events allow participants under 18. Please check with your AHA contact to confirm the race you are registering for allows participants under age 18).

The undersigned certifies that he/she is the parent or legal guardian of the participant, and that on behalf of the parent(s) and the participant agrees to the terms of this release, and does release, indemnify and hold harmless all individuals, parties and entities set forth above from any claim, loss or liability arising out of participant’s involvement in the program and any related events.
